About the Workshop
There is a landscape that has haunted the imagination of artists, photographers, dreamers and designers for over a century. Wide open. Unforgiving. Breathtakingly beautiful. A place where the sky is so vast it changes the way you think, and the land speaks in a language older than any city you've ever lived in.
This is the American West. And for six extraordinary days, it's yours.
Humble Creative Society's Wild West retreat is an immersion into the soul of one of the world's great landscapes — its craft, its culture, its cuisine, its silence, and its people. We ride into the mountains. We forage at golden hour. We sit with communities whose connection to this land stretches back thousands of years. We photograph, we make, we feast, and we come home changed.
This is not sightseeing. This is living.
THE EXPERIENCE
Every Morning
Before the day begins, it begins quietly. Optional morning yoga sessions on the ranch grounds — a daily ritual of breath, stillness and preparation. The kind of morning that makes everything that follows feel more vivid.
Arrival Evening — Welcome & Last Light
You arrive. You settle in. And then, as the afternoon light turns gold and long across the landscape, Simon Lewis — photographer, founder, and your guide for the week — takes you out into the land for your first lesson. With over twelve years photographing spaces for Ralph Lauren from New York to Aspen, he understands the aesthetic. And is on hand to help improve your skills.
The American West at golden hour is one of photography's greatest gifts. We don't waste it. The evening closes with a dinner under the stars, around the ranch table, with the people who will become your people by the end of the week.
Day One — Craft & Culture
The West has always been a place of makers. This morning we sit with a Native artisan to learn the ancient craft of turquoise jewellery making — a tradition rooted in thousands of years of indigenous culture, not trend or fashion. What you make, you keep.
The afternoon takes us to an artisan fabric weaving studio, where time-honoured techniques and extraordinary materials tell the story of a region through thread and texture. A quieter day. A deeper one.
Day Two — Into the Land
This is the day the West gets into your body. We ride out on horseback into the mountains — properly, deeply, for the full day — with nothing ahead of us but landscape and sky. At the peak of the ride, we stop. We light a fire. We cook the cowboy steak over open flame, the way it has always been done out here. Before we eat, we take a moment of intentional stillness — no phones, no noise, just the mountains and the fire and each other. Then we feast. Then we ride home at dusk.
Day Three — Rest, Forage & Feast
After yesterday, your body will thank you for a slower morning. The pool is yours. The facilities are yours. Rest, recover, and let the landscape do its quiet work on you.
As the afternoon softens into golden hour, we head out with a Master Forager on a walk through the land — gathering wild herbs, berries and edible plants that will become part of the evening's meal. Back at the ranch, the chef's table awaits. Every course tells the story of its ingredient — where it was found, what it means, how the land provides. It is one of those meals you will talk about for years.
Day Four — Wind River
An incredibly profound day of the retreat, and the one we approach with the most care and humility. We spend the day with the Eastern Shoshone community at the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming — not as visitors, not as observers, but as co-participants in an experience shaped entirely by our hosts. A sweat lodge. A sound bath. A ritual engagement with a culture whose relationship to this landscape puts everything else in perspective. This day is not ours to choreograph. It is theirs to offer, and ours to receive with open hearts.
Day Five — Style, Story & Farewell
The final morning is spent in town — a personal styling masterclass from a Ralph Lauren Stylist, exploring how to dress with intention, craft and a sense of place, followed by a wander through carefully chosen vintage stores where the history of the West lives in every rail. Real denim. Hand-tooled leather. Pieces with a past.
The afternoon is yours to explore. As evening falls, we gather one last time around the fire for a Western BBQ under the open sky. And as the stars come out, we close the week the way all Humble retreats close — with a curated presentation of the week's memories and experiences, compiled and projected into the night. Every person leaves with a copy. A record of what was made. And who made it together.
THIS RETREAT IS FOR YOU IF: You believe the most beautiful photographs are taken when you forget you're taking them. You think the best meals are the ones you helped create. You're drawn to cultures that have genuinely something to teach you. And you're ready to step into a landscape so vast and so honest that it simply will not let you stay the same.
